This Victorian gold scabbard brooch, possibly of French provenance, is crafted in 14k yellow gold, weighs 4.6g and measures 85mm long, 28mm wide and 2mm deep. This Victorian scabbard pin is designed as a combination of miniature Danish axe, a long-handled weapon with a large flat blade, attributed to the Vikings and a sword, protected by an artfully decorated sheath. It is documented that at least since the late Neolithic period, elaborate battle-axes had a religious significance, indicating the exalted status of their owner. This symbolic arm-length battle-axe was held in one or both hands and as the Vikings believed, delivered more cleaving power against a smaller target area as opposed to a sword swing. This alluring miniature axe features an artfully crafted, quintessentially Renaissance inspired blade, decorated with skillfully chiseled and textured openwork foliate and heart motif scrolls. The axe shoulder is adorned with a 0.05ct European-cut diamond graded I color and SI2 clarity, mounted within a dainty quadrangular frame. The arrow-headed extremities of the axe-head are embellished with delicate scrolls, while the upper axe-arm and the temptingly alluring sheath are enhanced by floral motifs in repoussé gold. This absorbing Victorian lapel pin features a delicate yellow gold chain connecting the enchanting sheath to the arm of the axe, engraved with the initials 'S.L.G' alongside the date 'Dec.25.93'.
