A green variety of chalcedony quartz dotted with bright red spots, bloodstone is also known as ‘heliotrope’, derived from two Greek words meaning ‘sun and turning’. In ancient times, polished stones were described as reflecting the sun and the attractive appearance of bloodstone reminded the ancients of the red setting sun, mirrored in the ocean. The traditional birthstone for the month of March along with aquamarine, bloodstone was treasured and often used by Medieval Christians to carve scenes of the crucifixion and martyrs, for which reason it was referred to as ‘the martyr's stone’. According to a legend about the origin of bloodstone, it was first formed as drops of Christ's blood fell and stained some jasper at the foot of the cross. A beautiful example of carved bloodstone with the seal of the German Emperor Rudolf II is amongst the unique collections at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
